Women in the Workforce
Students will take a quiz about women in the workforce and discuss the results of the quiz.


Primary Learning Outcomes
What are the differences in the numbers of women and men in the workforce? What are the differences in pay and type of work performed by men and women? What are nontraditional jobs for women?

Topic: Knowledge of different occupations and changing male/female roles.
Standard: Describe advantages and problems of entering nontraditional occupations. Describe the advantages of taking courses related to personal interests, even if they are most often taken by members of the opposite gender. Describe stereotypes, biases, and discriminatory behaviors that may limit opportunities for women and men in certain occupations.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 minutes
Discuss with students the types of occupations that women typically perform (i.e., teaching, childcare, elder care, food service, office work, etc.). Ask students whether there are more or fewer women than men in the workforce. Discuss their answers and tell them they will take a short quiz about working women.

Step:  2 Duration: 15 minutes
Distribute the Labor Force Quiz to students. Go over the directions and have them begin. Once they've completed the task, supply the correct answers from the Labor Force Quiz Answer Sheet and have them discuss their answers.

Step:  3 Duration: 20 minutes
Discuss the results of the quiz. Were students surprised by any of the answers? Do they think things have changed since these statistics came out? Distribute the New Statistics on Women in the Workforce Handout and discuss the information page and the "Women’s employment ranked by percentage of female workers in that occupation" table.
