Budgeting
Students will research a career that interests them to determine annual wages and use percentages to solve a series of budgeting problems.



Primary Learning Outcomes
What are the annual wages particular jobs pay? How do you budget the money by the month and by the year? Where does the money go that's earned each year?

Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 10 min.
Discuss with students the relationship between academic subjects--math, science, language arts and social science--students take in school and careers that use the skills acquired in these academic subjects. Write math, science, language arts and social studies on the board and ask students to choose which area they like best.

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Once students have chosen a subject area, tell them they will investigate jobs in those areas using the internet to find a career they like. List the web addresses under the proper subject area on the board and direct students to the proper web site.

Step:  3 Duration: 15 min.
Once students have connected with the web page, tell them to browse the list, choose one occupation of particular interest and find and record the median annual earnings for that career. If earnings are reported by the hour, have them multiply that number by 2080 working hours/year to find the annual earnings.

Step:  4 Duration: 15 min.
Distribute the Budgeting Handout for students to complete.

Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC standards.
