Standard: Identify various ways that occupations can be classified. Identify a number of occupational groups for exploration. Demonstrate skills in using school and community resources to learn about occupational groups. Identify sources to obtain information about occupational groups including self-employment. Identify skills that are transferable from one occupation to another. Identify sources of employment in the community.

Topic: Understanding how work relates to the needs and functions of the economy and society.
Standard: Describe the importance of work to society. Describe the relationship between work and economic and societal needs. Describe the economic contributions workers make to society. Describe the effects that societal, economic, and technological change have on occupations.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 15 min.
Discuss careers of the future that will or may be created by new energy, such as solar power, and new technologies, such as lasers and robotics. Also discuss how changes in lifestyle may create new careers or greater demand for some careers.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Ask students to compile a list of future occupations and describe what the job requirements for some of these jobs might be.

Step:  3 Duration: 30 min.
Have each student describe his or her ideal job for the future. Using magazines and construction paper, have students create a collage of pictures related to an occupation that interests them.
