Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Discuss with students how employers fill job vacancies by word-of-mouth, listing jobs with employment agencies and by advertising job openings in the newspaper. Distribute newspaper want ads to the class and discuss the listed ads--what information they contain and how useful they are to job seekers.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Discuss with students the way want ads are arranged by type in alphabetical order under headings such as accounting, administrative, banking, caregiving, sales, technician, etc. Review the pertinent parts of the ad: The type of worker needed, job duties, any educational, skill or experience requirements for the job, location and information about the employer, salary/wage information, and contact information. Is there other information included to be eye-catching or interest the reader? Discuss these items.

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Discuss the importance of science in many different jobs and have students identify any want ads in the paper for employment requiring scientific knowledge.

Step:  4 Duration: 10 min.
Tell student that they will research careers that require scientific knowledge on the internet and create a want ad for a particular job that interests them. Write on the board that the want ad must include: The type of worker needed, job duties, any educational, skill or experience requirements for the job, location and information about the employer, salary/wage information, and contact information. They may also include elements to catch the eye and interest the reader.

Step:  5 Duration: 30 min.
Direct students to the Bureau of Labor Statistic web site "Science at Various Levels is important in a Wide Range of Jobs." Instruct them to review the list, find one job that interests them, click on that job and collect information to write a want ad based on that job that includes the items written on the board. They may also include elements to catch the eye and interest the reader. Clarify directions, answer any questions and have students begin.
