Society and Work
Students will compare ideas about why people work, decide on the top five reasons and examine the decision making process used to arrive at their conclusions.

Why do people work? What are the rewards and costs involved in work? What are the most important reasons that people work? How do you arrive at these conclusions?

Topic: Understanding how work relates to the needs and functions of the economy and society.
Standard: Describe the importance of work to society. Describe the relationship between work and economic and societal needs. Describe the economic contributions workers make to society. Describe the effects that societal, economic, and technological change have on occupations.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 10 min.
Have students brainstorm and list on the board reasons why people work.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Divide class into groups of four or five students and have each group list in order of importance the top five reasons that people work.

Step:  3 Duration: 15 min.
Have student groups present their results to the class by turn. Once all groups have shared their results, discuss how each group arrived at their decisions to process the activity.
