Standard: Identify various ways that occupations can be classified. Identify a number of occupational groups for exploration. Demonstrate skills in using school and community resources to learn about occupational groups. Identify sources to obtain information about occupational groups including self-employment. Identify skills that are transferable from one occupation to another. Identify sources of employment in the community.

C. Career Planning

Topic: Knowledge of different occupations and changing male/female roles.
Standard: Describe advantages and problems of entering nontraditional occupations. Describe the advantages of taking courses related to personal interests, even if they are most often taken by members of the opposite gender. Describe stereotypes, biases, and discriminatory behaviors that may limit opportunities for women and men in certain occupations.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 10 min.
Have students name as many occupations as they can. Record them on the chalkboard. Ask students to identify some occupations that they would like to know more about.

Step:  2 Duration: several days
Have students develop an interview questionnaire to obtain information about the identified occupations. Instruct students to use the questionnaires they have developed to interview individuals who are in occupations that interest them.

Step:  3 Duration: 30 min.
Have students report their findings from the interview back to class.

Step:  4 Duration: 20 min.
Make a list of occupations that students have obtained information about during their interviews. Identify the career cluster to which each career belongs. Identify differences between male and female career choices.

Students' participation in the activity and their completed interviews will be evaluated.
Extension
Allow students to watch the interview style of major news reporters. Have students critique each interview and write down things that they liked and didn't like about the way the interviewer conducted the interview.

Modification
