Students will investigate careers in science by
brainstorming the correlations between science "hobbies" and careers that
make use of these specific interests. |
Primary Learning Outcomes
What are the correlations between science careers and science
hobbies?
Additional Learning Outcomes
Assessed QCC Standards:
Grade: 9-12
Guidance
B. Educational and Occupational Exploration
6
Topic: Skills to
locate, evaluate, and interpret career information.
Standard: -Describe the educational
requirements of various occupations. -Demonstrate use of a range of resources
(e.g., , handbooks, career materials, labor market information, and computerized
career information delivery systems). -Demonstrate knowledge of various
classification systems that categorize occupations and industries (e.g., ,
Dictionary of Occupational Titles). -Describe the concept of career ladders.
-Describe the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment as a career
option. -Identify individuals in selected occupations as possible information
resources, role models, or mentors. -Describe the influence of change in supply
and demand for workers in different occupations. -Identify how employment trends
relate to education and training. -Describe the impact of factors such as
population, climate, and geographic location on occupational
opportunities.
Procedures/Activities
Step:
1 Duration:
Set up a student display of science related hobbies. Include
such things as: · Aquariums · Astronomy · Fossils · Insects · Rocks · Pets ·
Plant propagation · Pottery · Terrariums
Step:
2 Duration:
Divide the students into nine small groups. Assign one of the
above categories to each group. Have the group brainstorm a list of occupations
related to that category of science based hobbies.
Step: 3 Duration:
Have groups share their results with the rest of the
class.

Technology Connection
Assessment
Students are assessed as they demonstrate understanding of the
interrelationships of hobbies and careers.
Extension
This activity can be extended by asking students to research
the educational preparation necessary in a science field related to their chosen
"hobby".
Remediation
Group participation helps address the difficulties students
face in reading and research.
Accommodation
Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can
be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in
classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC
standards. Below are suggested modifications correlated to the procedures of
this lesson plan.
