Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: 10 minutes
Discuss meteorology with students. Have them define the term and discuss what influence this area of science has on our day-to-day lives and on industry and commerce.

Step:  2 Duration: 15 minutes
Direct students to the Bureau of Labor Statistics website to investigate what environmental scientist do. Have them gather information on the Significant Points; Nature of the Work; Working Conditions; Employment; Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement; Job Outlook; and Earnings.

Web Resources for Step 2
Title: Occupational Outlook Handbook, Atmospheric Scientists
URL: http://stats.bls.gov/oco/ocos051.htm
Annotation: The Occupational Outlook Handbook web site provides in depth information on careers including the Nature of the Work; Working Conditions; Employment; Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement; Job Outlook; Earnings; Related Occupations; and Sources of Additional Information.

Step:  3 Duration: 15 minutes
Once students have completed their information gathering, divide them into small groups and have each group report to the class on one aspect of the information they've gathered.

Step:  4 Duration: 10 minutes
Tell students they will be a meteorologist for a day and report the local weather to the class. Pass around a calendar and have each student choose a day to present the weather report. Direct students to the Weather Channel website to find the information they need for their weather report and have students give their reports on the appropriate day.

Web Resources for Step 4
Title: The Weather Channel Local Forecast
URL: http://www.weather.com/
Annotation: Students can find local weather reports and 10-day forecasts, pollen counts, etc., by entering the zipcode for their location.
