Career Quest
A Smart Choices lesson in which students examine the abilities, training, and lifestyles required for various jobs. A Career Quest Quiz and Questionnaire help to focus student's attention on their abilities and careers that would be suited to them.

B. Educational and Occupational Exploration

Topic: Skills to locate, evaluate, and interpret career information.
Standard: -Describe the educational requirements of various occupations. -Demonstrate use of a range of resources (e.g., , handbooks, career materials, labor market information, and computerized career information delivery systems). -Demonstrate knowledge of various classification systems that categorize occupations and industries (e.g., , Dictionary of Occupational Titles). -Describe the concept of career ladders. -Describe the advantages and disadvantages of self-employment as a career option. -Identify individuals in selected occupations as possible information resources, role models, or mentors. -Describe the influence of change in supply and demand for workers in different occupations. -Identify how employment trends relate to education and training. -Describe the impact of factors such as population, climate, and geographic location on occupational opportunities.

C. Career Planning

Topic: Skills in career planning.
Standard: -Demonstrate career plans that reflect the importance of lifelong learning. -Demonstrate knowledge of postsecondary vocational and academic programs. -Demonstrate knowledge that changes may require retraining and upgrading of employees’ skills. -Describe school and community resources to explore educational and occupational choices. -Describe the costs and benefits of self-employment. -Demonstrate occupational skills developed through volunteer experiences, part-time employment, or cooperative educational programs. -Demonstrate skills necessary to compare education and job opportunities. -Develop an individual career plan, updating information from earlier plans, and including tentative decisions to be implemented after high school.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 
Have students select one of the careers they have identified as of interest to them through a career interest assessment and complete the “Career Quest Quiz.”

Step:  2 Duration: 
Have students complete the “Career Quest Questionnaire” and compare it to the “Career Quest Quiz.”

Step:  3 Duration: 
After completing the “Career Quest Questionnaire,” have students discuss their findings, using the following questions as a guide: a. Were you surprised about some of the information you found? b. Do you think you might like to work in any of these areas? Why or why not? c. If more than 50 percent of the workers were male, would you still consider the job area? Why or why not? d. If more than 50 percent of the workers were female, would you consider the job area? Why or why not?

Assessment
Students will be evaluated on completing the “Career Quest Quiz” and the “Career Quest Questionnaire,” comparing their responses, and discussing information regarding those careers.
Extension
Students may collect additional information about the careers they are interested in by writing related professional organizations or unions for information and by interviewing people in the identified careers
Remediation
Students can complete the quiz and questionnaire in groups, discussing and pinpointing various information needed.
