Attitude Checkup
After completing the Attitude Checklist, students are led to recognize that attitudes influence relationships, behavior, appearance, and emotional status. As a conclusion to this Smart Choices activity, they use the information to write a paper, "How I See Myself".

Standard: Writes for many purposes including, but not limited to, personal (journals, diaries, stories, poems), social (friendly letters, thank-you notes, invitations), academic (themes, reports, essays, analyses, critiques), and business (letters, memos, and applications) writing.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 
Have students complete the “Attitude Checklist,” keeping in mind that they are giving only general answers because all persons are a mix of fluctuating feelings and attitudes.

Step:  2 Duration: 
After the checklists are completed, have students choose one statement from each of the six areas and use the statements as a basis for writing a paper describing “How I See Myself.” Students should address both positive and negative aspects of their behavior.

Step:  3 Duration: 
Ask students to discuss their papers.

Step:  4 Duration: 
Discuss the importance of self-assessment and the need for periodic self-assessment throughout life.

Assessment
Students are assessed based on their “Attitude Checklist,” written papers describing how they see themselves, and discussion of the importance of honest and realistic self-assessments.
Extension
Students can repeat this activity at subsequent grades and discuss growth and change.
Remediation
A writing checklist can guide students experiencing difficulty with the writing process.
