The Universe
Students will identify some of the responsibilities related to various careers related to the study of the universe, such as astronomer and astronaut.

Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 10 min.
Lead students in a class discussion on how there are many occupations related to the study of the universe. Have students list as many occupations as they can think that are related to the study of the universe.

Step:  2 Duration: 20 min.
Encourage students to imagine that they are astronomers and have been asked to draw a mural of what they think the universe will look like in the year 3000. Have them compare this mural to what the present universe looks like. Encourage students to discuss what changes may develop and what environmental changes they predict for the future.

Students' participation in the activity will be evaluated.
Extension
Have students research more careers that are related to the study of space.
Remediation
Ask students to use reference material from the media center to locate more information about astronomy and astronauts. Have them prepare a short report on either career to share with the class.
