Career Interest Record Update
Students will update an individual “Career Interest Record” that indicates career interests as a result of changing attitudes, interests, aptitudes, and achievements.

Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.

C. Career Planning

Topic: Awareness of the career planning process.
Standard: Describe the importance of planning. Describe skills needed in a variety of occupational groups. Develop an individual career plan for the elementary school level.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 
The record should be continued through elementary school and middle school and used by teachers and counselors to better understand the aspirations of students. Teachers/counselors may determine what time the assessment should be administered during the school year.

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Have students discuss career development. (As we learn more and become familiar with a variety of careers, we develop more interests in careers.)

Step:  3 Duration: 25 min.
Distribute copies of each student’s previously completed “Career Interest Record.” Ask students to update their “Career Interest Record” based on their current interests and aptitudes.

Students' participation in the activity will be evaluated.
Extension
Ask students to further research one of the careers in which they are interested. Have them write a short report to share with the class.

Allow students to compare their answers to those they gave in the past and see how their interests have changed.
