Topic: Awareness of different occupations and changing male/female roles.
Standard: Describe how work is important to all people. Describe the changing life roles of men and women in work and family. Describe how contributions of individuals, both inside and outside the home, are important.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Let students handle the assortment of bolts, nuts, and screws and explain that these things are used to build machines. Long ago things were built using hand-carved wood. Let students examine and play with the old toys. Discuss how toys have changed. Do they think they would have more or less fun with the old toys?

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Have students identify recent inventions (personal computers, fax machines, microwaves, CDs). Have students discuss how inventions have changed the way we work and play.

Step:  3 Duration: 15 min.
Distribute the “Into the Future” activity sheet and review the top section with the class. Have students make their own predictions for the future on the bottom of the sheet.

Students' participation in the activity will be evaluated.
Extension
Ask students to draw an invention that they would like to see created in the future. Write a paragraph about what it would do and how it would change life in the present.

Allow studens to share their responses with a small group of students.
