Star Gazing
Students will define what an astronomer is and identify objects that are studied in the universe or solar system.

Primary Learning Outcomes
What does an astronomer do? What kinds of things does he/she study?

Additional Learning Outcomes

Assessed QCC Standards:

Grade: 3
Guidance
B. Educational and Occupational Exploration
6
Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.

Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Have students look up the terms “astronomer” and “solar system.” Students will define the terms based on the definition in the science book glossary.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Lead a class discussion on how astronomers view planets, stars, and asteroids in the solar system.

Step:  3 Duration: 15 min.
Encourage students to pretend they are astronomers and visualize the solar system. Then allow the students to draw a picture on a piece of construction paper of what the solar system looks like.

Step:  4 Duration: 5 min.
Have children discuss whether being an astronomer sounds like a career they would like. What kinds of skills would they need?

Materials and Equipment
Science book, construction paper, crayons, and pencil

Standards (Local and/or National)

Total Duration
30 min.

Technology Connection

Assessment
Students will be assessed on their participation in the activity.
Extension
Ask students to choose an element of the solar system that interests them and become astronomers themselves. As astronomers, students will need to use information in the media center to learn as much as they can about their chosen element.
Remediation
Have students conduct further research on the job of an astronomer and share a short report with the class.
Accommodation
For students with exceptional needs, what changes can be made in instruction and teaching delivery to enhance student participation and learning? Each area below is a direct link to general classroom accommodations.

Non-readers     Physical Impairments     Sensory Impairments     Attention/Behavior

Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC standards. Below are suggested modifications correlated to the procedures of this lesson plan.
