Career Math Puzzles
Students will identify different occupations, based on the assigned numbers for each letter of the alphabet.

Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Allow students the opportunity to brainstorm as many different occupations as possible related to math. Examples: accountant, statistician, banker, and cashier.

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Demonstrate for students how one can develop a pattern to spell these occupations, based on assigned letters of the alphabet. Example: C=3, A=1,S=19,H=8,I=9,E=5, R=18 makes CASHIER

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Encourage students to practice making their own career words using the pattern of the numbers assigned to the alphabets.

Step:  4 Duration: 15 min.
Distribute the career math scramble worksheet for students to complete.

Students' answers will be evaluated for accuracy.
Extension
Have students complete another career puzzle worksheet with multiplication problems instead of a simple code.
Remediation
Ask students to choose one math-related career and conduct further research to see what math skills that career uses. Have them share a short report with the class.
