Topic: Skills to understand and use career information.
Standard: Describe work of family members, school personnel, and community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things. Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents, relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 5 min.
Have students make a list of occupations with which they are familiar and write them on the board.

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Distribute the “Characteristics” list. Take each occupation individually and ask students which characteristics from the list they think apply to this occupation.

Step:  3 Duration: 5 min.
After all occupations have been discussed, ask students to pick out characteristics common to all the occupations.

Step:  4 Duration: 5 min.
After students have determined the characteristics, ask if they were thinking of men and women for the job. Discuss the jobs women now do that were once considered male-only jobs. Cite examples from your own community.

Step:  5 Duration: 15 min.
Form small groups and have students write a job description for an occupation of their own choosing.

Assessment
Students' participation in the activity will be evaluated. Their job descriptions can be assessed.
Extension
Give students a blank venn diagram and ask them to compare the characteristics of two different jobs.
Remediation
Have students choose one career in which they are interested and prepare a short written report that includes characteristics of the job.
