Students will write a mathematical number sentence and
solve the word problems related to career
stories. |
Primary Learning Outcomes
What are some different careers? How can I create a math
problem based on career information?
Additional Learning Outcomes
Assessed QCC Standards:
Grade: 2
Mathematics
Problem Solving
31
Topic: Word
Problems
Standard: Solves one-
and two-step word problems related to appropriate second-grade objectives.
Includes oral and written problems and problems with extraneous information as
well as information from sources such as bar graphs and pictographs.
Whole Number Computation; Estimation; Whole Number
Operations
36
Topic: Addition
and Subtraction
Standard: Recalls addition facts (sums to 20) and related subtraction facts
presented orally, vertically and horizontally (rewrite vertically).
38
Topic: Addition
and Subtraction
Standard: Initially using manipulatives and then connecting the manipulatives
to symbolic procedures, adds combinations of one-, two-, and three-digit numbers
without and with regrouping- and subtracts one- and two-digit numbers from two-
and three-digit numbers with and without regrouping. Include vertical and
horizontal presentation with the horizontal rewritten vertically.
Non-Assessed QCC Standards:
Grade: 2
Guidance
B. Educational and Occupational Exploration
6
Topic: Skills to
understand and use career information.
Standard:
Describe work of family members, school personnel, and
community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things.
Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship
of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs
that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of
occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which
self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents,
relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.
Procedures/Activities
Step:
1 Duration: 5 min.
Brainstorm different careers on the board with
students.
Step: 2 Duration: 10
min.
Encourage students to think of stories related to careers that
can be solved based on thematical number sentences. Provide students with
examples. Example: Susie has a lemonade stand. She charges ten cents per glass.
Susie sold eight glasses of lemonade. How much did she earn? 8 x 10 = 80 cents
Step: 3 Duration: 15 min.
Allow students to volunteer to come to the blackboard and
create career stories and solve them, using mathematical number
sentences.
Step: 4 Duration: 15
min.
Distribute the “Career Word Problems Worksheets” and have
students complete them independently.
Attachments for Step 4
Title: FileName: Career Word Problems Worksheets.doc
Description:
Print and copy for each student.
Materials and Equipment
Chalkboard, Chalk, Paper and pencil, Worksheet
Standards (Local and/or National)
Total Duration
45 min.
Technology Connection
Assessment
Students' answers to the Career Word Problem worksheet will be
assessed for accuracy.
Extension
Have students figure out how much it would cost to have a
lemonade stand. Figure out cost of supplies, how much you would charge for the
product, etc. Ask students to create a business plan for a lemonade stand.
Remediation
In a small group setting, guide students in creating their own
career word problems. Have them write down their problem and illustrate it.
Write the number sentence and answer on the back and create a class book of word
problems.
Accommodation
Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can
be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in
classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC
standards. Below are suggested modifications correlated to the procedures of
this lesson plan.
