Topic: Awareness of the relationship between work and learning.
Standard: Identify different types of work, both paid and unpaid. Describe the importance of preparing for occupations. Demonstrate effective study and information-seeking habits. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of practice, effort, and learning. Describe how current learning relates to work. Describe how one’s role as a student is like that of an adult worker.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 15 min.
Discuss learning at home and school. Have students complete these sentences by writing with teacher’s help: Last year in Kindergarten I ... But now that I’m in first grade ... This summer I want to learn to ...

Step:  2 Duration: 10 min.
Stress that learning new things is part of growing up. Point out to students that they should write down things they learn in school as well as things they learn other places. Have them discuss what they wrote down. They can elaborate on this by adding things they learned before they started school (how to walk, eat with a spoon, etc.).

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Let students draw pictures of various things they have learned.

Assessment
Students answers to oral questions and participation in the activity will be assessed.
Extension
Ask students to go home and ask their parents to list some things that they have learned since they finished school. Allow students to share their findings when they return the next day.
Remediation
Have students make a list of goals that they hope to accomplish during the next school year.
