Topic: Awareness of the benefits of educational achievement.
Standard: Describe how academic skills can be used in the home and community. Identify personal strengths and weaknesses in subject areas. Identify academic skills needed in several occupational groups. Describe relationships among ability, effort, and achievement. Implement a plan of action for improving academic skills. Describe school tasks that are similar to skills essential for job success. Describe how the amount of education needed for different occupational levels varies.

Topic: Awareness of the relationship between work and learning.
Standard: Identify different types of work, both paid and unpaid. Describe the importance of preparing for occupations. Demonstrate effective study and information-seeking habits. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of practice, effort, and learning. Describe how current learning relates to work. Describe how one’s role as a student is like that of an adult worker.


Procedures/Activities


Step:  1 Duration: 20 min.
Have students listen to workers in different occupations explain their duties and the need for reading, writing, and math skills in performing these duties.

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
After the workers have left, review with students the importance of reading, writing, and math skills on the job.

Step:  3 Duration: 10 min.
Help students divide a piece of paper into 3 sections. Help students think of 5 jobs that use math, 5 that use reading, and 5 that use writing. Ask students to write these careers in the appropriate place on their sheet.

Various workers (parents, school employees, friends) speak to the class about their occupations

Assessment
Students will be assessed on their completed papers.
Extension
Have students research one of the careers that was presented to them and write a few sentences about the career.
Remediation
Ask students to interview a family member and have them explain how they use reading, writing and math in their lives everyday. Allow students to share their discoveries with the class.
