Surveying Careers in Science and Technology
Students will complete a guided web search on three science and technology occupations and compare the earnings and training required for each occupation.

Primary Learning Outcomes
What types of careers require applied science? What are the earnings for those careers? What are the training and educational requirements for those careers?

Additional Learning Outcomes

Procedures/Activities

Step:  1 Duration: 10 min.
Discuss with students the types of careers in which science is important. Advanced levels of science are required for chemists, nurses, meteorologist, and physicians. Have students name other careers where knowledge of science is required. (LPN, engineering technician, pilots and flight engineer, physical therapist, etc.)

Step:  2 Duration: 5 min.
Tell students they will investigate three occupations that require applied science and report on the 1)the median annual earnings in industries employing the largest numbers of these workers, 2)how the demand for these workers will increase or decrease in the future, and 3)the educational and training requirements for the jobs.

Step:  3 Duration: 5 min.
Have students use the internet and access the Bureau of Labor Statistics web site "Science at Various Levels is Important in a Wide Range of Jobs."

Web Resources for Step 3
Title: Teacher's Guide to Careers in Science
URL: http://stats.bls.gov/k12/html/tch_sci1.htm
Annotation: This Bureau of Labor Statistics link lists various careers by the level of science required from advanced, to applied to practical applications. Clicking on the occupations listed provides information on the nature of the work, conditions, employment, training and earnings, etc.

Step:  4 Duration: 20 min.
Once students have the web site up, distribute the Applied Science Occupations Handout, go over the directions, ask for questions and have them begin.
