entirely age specific). Students examine these stages and relate them to
their career development in this Smart Choices
activity. |

Standard: -Demonstrate responsibility for making tentative educational and
occupational choices. -Identify alternatives in given decision making

during high school that will lead to marketable skills for entry-level
employment or advanced training. -Identify and complete required steps toward

Topic: Understanding the interrelationship of life roles.
Standard: -Demonstrate knowledge of life
stages. -Describe factors that determine lifestyles (e.g., socioeconomic status,
culture, values, occupational choices, work habits). -Describe ways in which
occupational choices may affect lifestyle. -Describe the contribution of work to
a balanced and productive life. -Describe ways in which work, family, and
leisure are interrelated. -Describe different career patterns and their
potential effect on family patterns and lifestyle. -Describe the importance of
leisure activities. -Demonstrate ways that occupational skills and knowledge can
be acquired through leisure.

Description: An outline of the factors influencing
career choices as they relate to the stages of development for a career.
Step: 2 Duration:
Ask students to identify which stage they believe they are
in.
Step: 3 Duration:
Have students list the factors in each stage, indicating the
degree of knowledge they believe they have in each of the stages.
Step: 4 Duration:
Have students select a career they are interested in and make
a plan for reaching the implementation stage.

Assessment
Students will be assessed by their ability to identify the
four stages involved in career development and name factors involved in each
stage.
Extension
Anytime throughout their lifetime, when individuals change
careers or occupations, they work through these stages. Students can conduct an
interview with family members and friends to identify their progress through
these stages
Remediation
Reading difficulties can interfere with the necessary
background in the handout, “Stages in Career Development and Decision Making”. A
student partner can be available to help with reading limitations.
Accommodation
Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can
be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in
classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC
standards. Below are suggested modifications correlated to the procedures of
this lesson plan.
