Standard:
Describe work of family members, school personnel, and
community workers. Identify occupations according to data, people, and things.
Identify work activities of interest to the student. Describe the relationship
of beliefs, attitudes, interests, and abilities to occupations. Describe jobs
that are present in the local community. Identify the working conditions of
occupations (e.g., , inside/outside, hazardous). Describe ways in which
self-employment differs from working for others. Describe how parents,
relatives, adult friends, and neighbors can provide career information.
Procedures/Activities
Step:
1 Duration: 5 min.
Ask students: How many have a pet? What kind of pet do you
have? Where did you get your pet?
Step:
2 Duration: 10 min.
Careers related to the pet and animal industry are diverse and
interesting. Some require several years of formal training; others require less
training. Have students brainstorm different pet and animal careers. (Compare
them with the “Beastly Careers” sheet and add any careers that were
missed.)

Have students expand their knowledge of these careers by
investigating careers that interest them and writing a paper about the careers.
Have students draw a picture of an animal to go with their paper.

Extension
Ask students to create an animal care booklet with steps
involved for properly caring for an animal.
Remediation
Have a pet store owner or veterinarian come to your classroom
and discuss their occupations. Ask students to prepare interview questions to
ask.

Modification
For students with significant disabilities, what changes can
be made in instruction and teaching delivery to allow students to participate in
classroom instruction while working on IEP objectives and off grade level QCC
standards. Below are suggested modifications correlated to the procedures of
