Summer Job Hints for Students
Start job hunting as early in the Spring as
possible. Once school is over for the year, students everywhere are
looking for a job. Remember that college students often finish their
spring term in early May. Many high school students are in session
until the first of June. In order to be competitive, high school
students may need to be available in May. Collect information for job applications. You will need information about yourself (name, address, phone number), your education (school names and addresses), your previous employment (names and phone numbers), and your volunteering and community service (names and phone numbers). In addition, you will need the names and phone numbers of three references not related to you. Teachers, counselors, and neighbors are all good reference choices. Make a list of possible job opportunities. You should include jobs that are related to your future career plans as well as jobs that pay well or have lots of openings. Target businesses that have increased hours or services during summer months. These might include retail, day care, recreation, and restaurant operations. Consider starting your own business like lawn mowing or pet sitting. Dress for success. Choose conservative clothing and a limited amount of jewelry for interviewing. Plan to carry a folder that contains your job application information or resume. Bring a pen and some paper for note taking. Wear a watch to keep you on time. Turn off your cell phone. Choose a good day for job hunting. Holidays and weekends are not the best time. Avoid lunch and dinner times as well. Plan on visiting several businesses in one day. Some companies have an on-line hiring process, check out web sites before going in person. Don’t get discouraged. Job hunting takes time and effort! |
