Program Profile: Forestry | Home | |||
| Informal perspective about a program of study. |
How I Got Started: Ever since I was little, one of my favorite hobbies has been camping. My dad and I take a trip every month and go camping in the woods for a few nights. It is relaxing and soothing to be surrounded by nature. It is nice to get away from the city for a few nights and be in a forest with all the trees, animals, and streams. At night it is so dark that you can see thousands of stars in then sky and the only sounds you hear are made by the animals and the water. I want to help preserve forest and other similar environments so people can continue to enjoy them in the future.
What I Want to Study: Forestry programs prepare people to manage forests and care for trees. Students learn different forest management methods that benefit recreation, industry, and the environment. In school, I can take classes such as, Natural Resources, Conservation, Dendrology, and Forest Ecology to further my knowledge on the topic of forestry. These courses will teach me about the science of trees, water, wildlife, and soil.
What I Can Do In The Future: With a degree in forestry I can become a forester and work to achieve the best use of forest land and resources. Foresters also participate in research to develop methods for protecting forests from fires, insects, and disease. I could also be a park ranger and enforce regulations, provide information, and patrol the area. Another exciting job I could have would be a forest and conservation worker. They survey and mark trees for harvest and collect information on timber, water, insects, and disease.
