Program Profile: Commercial Fishing | Home | |||
| Informal perspective about a program of study. |
How I Got Started: My father and grandfather own a fishing company which sells fish to local restaurants and supermarkets. Every chance I get, I wake up early and go out on the boat with them. My favorite thing to catch is shrimp. I always try to guess how many pounds we caught during the day, but I am not a good guesser, and my father and grandpa are always so much closer than I am. One of the good things about spending so much time out on the boat is that I know most of the important aspects of commercial fishing. I am not familiar with the business aspect of the company though, so I plan on taking some business classes so I can be ready to be a full-time commercial fisherman.
What I Want to Study: I love spending time on the sea and working with my family. So, my next logical step is to study commercial fishing so I can take over my grandpas’ fishing business. In order for me to do that, he said that I need to go to school and take some classes. Some classes that I am going to take include fish production, water resources, and business. I want to make my grandpa and father proud, so I will take as many classes as I need to in order to have the chance to run a successful business.
What I Can Do In The Future: I plan on helping my grandfather and my father with the family business, but if I was not interested in that, there are other jobs I could do that has to do with working with fish. One option is working in a fish market and selling many different types of fish to people. Another option is becoming a deck hand and working less with the actual fish and more with the ship or boat.
