Career Profile: Construction Cost Estimator Home

Informal perspective of what an occupation might be like.

What I Do: No construction company begins a major job without knowing how much it will cost. That’s why construction firms hire cost estimators like me. The first step in developing an estimate is visiting the proposed building site. I assess basic services like water and electricity and prepare a site report. Next, I calculate the amount and cost of materials needed to construct the building, the cost of labor, and other factors like taxes and insurance. Once I consider all the different components, I use computer software to compile a total project-cost summary, which I submit to the owner of the company.

Best and Hardest Parts of My Job: I enjoy my work very much. Every project is different even though the estimation process remains the same. In addition to the variety, I like having a job that lets me use my aptitude for math and my knowledge of the construction industry. Sometimes, though, the work is quite stressful, especially when it gets close to the deadline. If I don’t submit an accurate estimate, the company could wind up spending thousands of more dollars than anticipated. That is not good for business!

How I Got Started: Like many other estimators, I worked in construction for a number of years before specializing in this area. My experience proved really useful because estimators need to know all about the construction process. I also took some courses in cost-estimating techniques at a local technical college. I am now working on my professional certification through the Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineers.
